Comet Lovejoy (C/2013 R1) is a long-period comet discovered on 2013 September 07 by Terry Lovejoy using a 0.2-meter (7.9 in) Schmidt–Cassegrain telescope.
Comet Lovejoy made its closest approach to Earth on 2013 Nov 19 at a distance of 0.3967 AU (59,350,000 km; 36,880,000 mi). The comet came to perihelion (closest approach to the Sun) on 2013 Dec 22 at a distance of 0.81 AU (121,000,000 km; 75,000,000 mi) from the Sun.
Throughout November (2013) to January (2014), Comet Lovejoy is visible in the morning sky just before morning twilight.
